Seabreeze Amusement Park (Seabreeze) is a family-friendly amusement park located within Irondequoit, New York, a suburb within Rochester, New York, where Irondequoit Bay meets Lake Ontario. The cool breezes from Lake Ontario and various activities have made Seabreeze the most popular summer destination for New Yorkers living in the Western region since 1879. Nowadays, Seabreeze features a complete amusement park and a water park offering something for every family member. Based on the National Amusement Park Historical Association (NAPHA), Seabreeze is the fourth-oldest operating amusement park in the United States and the thirteenth-oldest active amusement park in the world.
Seabreeze Amusement Park was founded in existence under the name of Sea Breeze Grove, opening on the 5th of August in 1879. That was when the first picnickers’ train came to the park on the newly constructed Rochester & Lake Ontario Railroad. Also known as the Bay Railroad, the 6.05-mile-long steam line was explicitly built to transport passengers from a depot located in Rochester, NYC, near the junction of Portland Avenue (then North Avenue) and Bay Street. The railroad became an instant success and attracted more customers than it could manage at the start.
The park was not a place for amusement rides. Instead, it had beautifully maintained grounds paved with walking paths, a pavilion with ice cream and cigar stands, a dance platform, and picnic areas. The park was located on the most picturesque Bluff in the region. Visitors went to Sea Breeze to enjoy the beauty of the landscape, cool lake breezes, and entertainment that included vaudeville shows and concerts. A baseball field and a baseball diamond situated in the picnic groves were the venue for sporting events for local teams of sport and also for people who enjoyed picnics. Sea Breeze was so popular that the local pastor wrote his complaint to Democrat & Chronicle, lamenting that Bay Railroad trains were full and the church pews empty. This was soon rectified by holding church services inside a tent situated on the grounds of the park to allow people to go to Sea Breeze and fulfill their obligation to God.
