Rochester Contemporary Art Center Rochester Contemporary Art Center is an art center that is non-profit and situated in Rochester in NY‘s East End District. The center provides an area for exchanging ideas and is an organization that is not for profit and was established in 1977. As a place of contemporary artwork, the center offers events for the public in addition to opportunities for the artists. The center presents and promotes contemporary art in all forms and is well-known for its annual 6×6 exhibit. The art center is famous for its highly-rated Makers & Mentors Exhibitions, which bring together notable educators and former and current students. Its State of the City exhibitions concentrates on the future’s urbanism and showcase artists from all over the region. The group also hosts a variety of guided group exhibitions and collaborations with art organizations that span all types and community-based initiatives.
The organization was founded in 1977 as Pyramid Arts Center 1977 by Tony Petracca and Gina Mosesson The center was situated in a variety of storefronts and warehouses around Rochester. Then, in 2001 the center was rebranded and moved to its present site within Rochester’s East End District. In 2007, the center launched First Friday, a monthly citywide art show with 30 additional art galleries in all of Rochester. The center was inaugurated in December 2012. The center announced the acquisition of the 137 East Ave. facility and began its first capital project, The Future Fund. Rochester Contemporary Art Center Rochester Contemporary Art Center currently has more than 850 members, approximately 60% of whom are artists. Artists from the center participate in an annual Members Exhibition. The center presents various shows in the gallery every year. 6×6
In 2008 The Rochester Contemporary Art Center launched the now booming small-scale art movement called 6×6. Every year, 6×6 comes back, featuring thousands of unique works donated by famous people, local and international artists, college students, designers, youngsters, and many more. Each piece measures 6×6 square inches and is signed on the reverse and displayed anonymously. All submissions are accepted, displayed, and available to the general public at $20 per (in the gallery and online for purchase worldwide) to support the center. Artist names are made available to the purchaser upon purchase. Being part of this International Small Art Phenomenon is at no charge.
Previous submissions have included artworks by George Condo, Andrea Barrett, Wendell Castle, Garth Fagan, Philip Glass, Albert Paley, Joel Seligman, Louise Slaughter, Lovely A. Warren, and Danny Wegman.
