The Strong National Museum of Play (known as The Strong Museum and simply The Strong) makes up The Strong of Rochester, New York, United States. It was established in 1969 and built upon the private collection of Rochester, NYC local Margaret Woodbury Strong; the Museum was opened for public viewing in 1982 after several years of planning, cataloging, and developing exhibitions for the museum’s new facility in the heart of downtown Rochester. At least for the fifteen years following its establishment, the Museum’s purpose was to provide an understanding of typical American culture and social history between 1830 and 1940 in the hands of H.J. Swinney and William T. Alderson. Mrs. Strong’s collection of toys and dolls, American and European decorative artwork, prints, Japanese crafts, and advertising ephemera formed a solid basis for this purpose. The groups were further enriched by purchasing and donating collections to aid the Museum’s initial mission in full. The Museum received significant public attention and financial aid from The National Endowment for the Humanities’ Exhibitions and Public Programs division.
In the late 1990s, The museum’s Board of Trustees and Director made the Museum’s mission change to preserve, collect and explain the game’s history. Since then, the Museum has refined and expanded its collection (hundreds of thousands of objects) and doubled its size in 1997 and 2006.
The Museum is currently the fifth of Play Partners of The Strong and is also home to The National Toy Hall of Fame as well, The International Center for the History of Electronic Games, and the Brian Sutton-Smith Library, as well as Archives of Play, and creates an annual publication called the American Journal of Play.
