Seneca Park Zoo is a 20-acre (6.3 ha) animal park in Rochester, New York. It is home to over 90 species, which include reptiles, mammals, amphibians, birds, fish, and Arachnids. It is recognized by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA). The zoo is run under the direction of Monroe County, with support from the Seneca Park Zoo Society. The first zoo was opened in 1894 at Seneca Park.
Seneca Park, designed by Frederick Law Olmsted, is situated between The City of Rochester and the Town of Irondequoit along the Genesee River. The park opened in 1893, and the animals began to be displayed in 1894. The first significant Zoo expansion included that of the Main Zoo Building in 1931. The building housed many different animals.
Seneca Park Zoo Society Seneca Park Zoo Society was established in the name of an educational establishment in New York State in 1957. Since it was founded, the Society has grown into a non-profit organization that promotes and supports the zoo with special educational events, programs, marketing, and public relations, as well as fundraising for wildlife conservation in situ and the operation of food, gifts, and other operations. The Society provides memberships for families living in the area.
In 1975 the cave for polar bears was created to house the two Polar bears (Penny and Nickels) that were purchased with nickels and pennies collected from local schoolchildren. When 1993 arrived, the Zoo opened its $2.5 million Genesee Trail along with the Discovery Center; its first exhibit was a landscape-based immersion. It was followed when the production of the $8.2 million Rocky Coasts was exhibited.
Exhibits
The Rocky Coasts exhibit opened in 1997. It’s a zone dedicated to the animals of the temperate and polar coastal regions around the globe, including African penguins, California sea lions, snowy Owls, Canada Lynx, and Sandhill cranes. The exhibit features an underwater viewing zone that brings visitors near sea lions swimming in the water behind substantial glass windows—Masai plains zebra and giraffes. The exhibit A Step Into Africa was unveiled in 2012. The exhibit has a replica of the Maasai building, an interactive Dig Zone where you can dig up fossils in the form of casts and interactive learning tools, and a stationary safari bus where the Zoo’s African lions can be seen. The exhibit shows the Zoo’s African elephants, olive baboons, and African Lions in natural settings. Seneca Park Zoo is home to the first three African elephants found in New York State.
This Rochester, NYC zoo’s collection of animals regularly alters according to AZA guidelines regarding breeding, The Species Survival Plans (SSPs), animal deaths, and births. Spring 2013 was productive for the zoo, as they welcomed two African cubs of lions as well as 6 African penguin chicks, a golden Lion Tamarin baby, three domestic goat babies, three domestic goat kids, a California Sea Lion pup, and a Bornean orangutan infant. In 2018, Seneca Park Zoo began its multi-year Master Plan improvement. The first components of a Cold Asia area opened next to the animal hospital in June. They include an area for the snow leopards as well as red pandas. In September, the zoo unveiled an all-new African exhibit named Animals of the Savanna. The five-acre space comprises Masai plains zebras, giraffes, and a white rhino. It also has naked mole rats, an aviary, and various other exhibits.
