George Eastman Museum

The George Eastman Museum, also known as George Eastman House, International Museum of Photography and Film, the oldest museum in the world dedicated to photography and one of the most enduring film archives, opened its doors to visitors in 1949 in Rochester, New York. It is renowned for its collections of cinema, photography, and film; the museum is an expert in the preservation of films and conservation of photographs, as well as educating conservators and archivists across the globe. The Dryden Theatre is home to 500 people. Dryden Theatre, the museum, is situated within the estate of philanthropist and entrepreneur George Eastman, the founder of the Eastman Kodak Company. The estate was made a National Historic Landmark in 1966.

The Rochester estate of George Eastman (1854-1932) was left and passed to the University of Rochester in Rochester, New York. The university’s presidencies (first Benjamin Rush Rhees, later Alan Valentine) occupied Eastman’s mansion as a residence for ten years. After 1948, the university donated the estate to the museum as well as it was then that the Georgian Revival Style mansion was modified to accommodate the museum’s activities. George Eastman House was chartered as an institution in 1947. Since its inception, the museum’s goal has been to preserve, collect, and display photographic and film history. The museum officially opened on the 9th of November 1949, with its main collections in the public rooms in the Eastman’s home. In October 2015, The museum changed its title from the George Eastman House to the George Eastman Museum. The museum’s initial collections comprised the Medicus group that contained Civil War photographs by Alexander Gardner, the Eastman Kodak Company’s historical collection, and the huge collection of Gabriel Cromer’s nineteenth-century French photography. The Eastman Museum has received donations of complete archives, individual and corporate collections, and estates of famous photographers, in addition to thousands of motion photographs and huge collections of cinematic and ephemera.

Collections

This Rochester, NYC museum’s collection includes more than 400,000 photos and negatives that date back from the beginning of photography up to the present 28,000 motion picture movies, as well as three million cinematic objects, which include letters and musical scores, scripts, posters, lobby cards, film stills, and celebrity portraits and more than 16,000 pieces of cinematographic and photographic technology; an internationally recognized research collection of periodicals, books and other resources about moving and photographic images as well as George Eastman’s home furniture and decorative art correspondence, both personal and business and private library photos, negatives films, and other personal belongings.

Moving Image Collection
