A view from the air of the neighborhood Group 14621 is a swath of city streets, along with an incredibly deep gash that forms the Genesee River gorge in Rochester, New York. St. Stanislaus Kostka Church is a popular destination for visitors for its annual Polish Arts Festival. It was founded by residents concerned about their neighbors’ safety and zoning issues. The association is active across many fronts, including creating youth-focused programs, procuring grants to fund repairs to homes with low incomes, planting community gardens, and acquiring and selling foreclosed or vacant homes to first-time buyers. The association’s efforts have helped to maintain Hickey Freeman Co, a famous maker of male suits since 1899, located in the area close to the homes of its employees. Local businesses also began within Group 14621, such as R.C. Shaheen Paint and Salvatore’s Pizzeria. Roup 14621 has been a passionate leader in rehabilitation and community visioning efforts. Community leaders and residents collaborated with the Ibero-American Action League and the Healthy Kids Coalition on Project HOPE, culminating in a playground built by the community, biking and walking trails, and a garden for the community at the intersection of Conkey and Clifford Avenues. Other initiatives comprise the “La Avenida” streetscape beautification on North Clinton Avenue and a plan to renovate vacant homes with green initiatives to attract new buyers, also known as The Remington Super Urban Proposal. In 2013, the Joseph Avenue Business Association (JABA) invited community members to develop a comprehensive plan to address issues from streetscapes and pollution to pedestrian safety and the illegal use of drugs.
