It is located in the Swillburg community, a warm and active triangular-shaped community in Rochester, New York. The neighborhood, home of committed and loving residents, is between Field Street, South Clinton Avenue, Meigs Street, and I-490. The beautiful narrow streets and the natural mix of businesses and homes provide an atmosphere of a village with the convenience of city life.
The historic center of Swillburg is believed as that of the Karages farm, commemorated through Karages Place. This is a narrow street that connects Clinton Ave and I-490. It’s located adjacent to the Old Erie Canal, which is today I-490. In the early century, George Goebel ran a famous pig farm at the intersection of Henrietta Street and South Goodman Ave. Swillburg’s name could originate from Goebel’s pigs ate the neighbors’ garbage, referred to as swill.
Irish and German immigrants settled in the neighborhood of working-class people in the early part of the century. They set up specialty shops, supermarkets, and other businesses along South Clinton Avenue. Today, restaurants like those of the 1930s Highland Park Diner, upscale Rooney’s Restaurant, and the authentic India House provide diverse dining options.
Swillburg is convenient to everything the amenities that Rochester offers, including Rochester, New York’s University of Rochester, Highland Park, Kodak Hall, and the George Eastman House International Center of Photography.
An average evening in Swillburg could include a relaxing stroll through the neighborhood garden, a meal at a local restaurant, or watching a film at the gorgeously restored Art Deco Cinema Theater. Otto Henderberg Park is named after a long-time Swillburg resident fighting to protect the area when the City Council announced plans to split it by extending the length of I-390 between Brighton and downtown. In 1975, the council voted to abstain from programs, but not before the area of 40 homes was demolished to make room for the development. The park was later built to replace the destroyed homes. One of the homes that killed 14 Sycamore Street was where the famous jazz singer Cab Calloway was born. A memorial plaque is now erected on the spot.

Otto Helderberg Park
The land that was cleared, located cleared land between Avon and Sycamore Streets (off of Field Street) was transformed into Otto Henderberg Square in honor of the long-time resident who was the driving force behind the campaign. Front porches and a peaceful street surround the square; this lush green space is now a wonderful location for picnics with the family or some of our community gatherings. Labyrinth Garden
The Labyrinth Garden is located at Henrietta/ Pappert. A brick and slate path flows through a perennial garden brimming with hues. Daffodils explode into the winter snow spring, while irises and peonies make the galleries awash with color as vines and roses climb the trellises in summer. Various types of grass rise in the fall and hold their form throughout winter.
