The Pearl-Meigs Monroe Neighborhood is blocks away from Rochester, New York‘s green spaces, Highland Park and Cobbs Hill, but its green ethos earned it the nickname “The Garden District. “The Garden District.”
Neighborhood residents, more than 80 percent renters, promote their commitment to their neighborhood through gorgeously landscaped gardens, with some featuring statues of formality or “found art.” Small streets and corner gardens are being created for the benefit of everyone.
Beyond the residential areas, there is a bustling commercial district that offers a variety of shops, restaurants, yoga studios, an art gallery, the historic Monroe Branch Public Library, and the YMCA. Neighborhood boundaries extend northward from Monroe Avenue (the south side of which runs from Alexander Street to South Goodman Street), south to Broadway/Inner loop, east to South Goodman Street, and west to Route 490. Neighborhood streets comprise Alexander, Edmonds, Meigs, South Goodman, Elmhurst, Lawton Street, Pearl, Woodlawn Streets, Averill, and Monroe Avenues, as well as Broadway.
Before the Garden District, or the avenue named in honor of President James Monroe, the area was one of the two historical routes that connected the initial Settlement that was Rochester, as well as Pittsford, the Village of Pittsford. Electric streetcars, powered by horses, expanded the neighborhood and eventually reached the Erie Canal (today I-490) in the 1890s. The group meets every month and communicates with its members through the publication of a newsletter called “Growing Together” and the website -“Pearl Meigs Monroe Neighborhoods. They are joined at the local building SEAC, which brought a Street Manager on the Avenue to collaborate with local businesses. MVTF is a partnership between SEAC, Rochester, NYC, Neighbors Building Neighborhoods Sector 7, South East Arts Development, SEAC, the Monroe Avenue Merchants Association, and neighborhood associations in the area block clubs, which has an influential voice for the neighborhood. SEAC assists the region in the development of housing and economic growth.
