The Maplewood neighborhood might have remained a park if the city backed the landscape architect Frederick Law Olmstead’s initial plan for an open space with a riverfront Genesee River gorge that joined Seneca Park with Maplewood Park in Rochester, New York. Between 1870 and the 1930s, massive estates in huge areas and homes with distinctive architectural features were constructed along shaded streets lined with trees.
Today’s residents enjoy the finest of urban living. Beautiful older homes are increasing the value of their homes (many are listed on the National Register of Historic Places), and a vibrant multicultural community works to preserve its past and safeguard its future. The boundaries of the neighborhood currently extend westward to Mt. Read Boulevard. North to the historical Holy Sepulchre Cemetery and east to the Genesee River. The southernmost border, Driving Park, was an exceptionally very popular “sulky” or harness racing racecourse Rochester Driving Park, from 1874 until 1895. Alongside the racetrack, it also had exhibition shows like Buffalo Bill’s Wild West Show.
Many of the streets were developed by Olmstead and include Seneca Parkway, which consists of the central mall, nearly 1 mile long. It is now filled with a stunning collection of early 20th-century houses with different architectural styles. Further to the north was the old St. Bernard’s Seminary, built in 1892 using the red Medina Stone, converted to St. Bernard’s Park studio and one-bedroom homes, many with high ceilings.
Maplewood Neighborhood Association, Maplewood Neighborhood Association, is a non-profit organization which’s motto is “Historic Maplewood – A Family Place,” it typically has 75-150 attendees at its monthly meeting. It also announces many ways residents can be involved, including Block clubs, CERT (Certified Emergency Response Team ), Dewey Avenue “Adopt-A-Block” Litter Pick-Up, Maplewood Gardening Team, and the MNA Arts Committee.
The annual festival at Maplewood Rose Gardens reminds the community to take a moment and smell the roses every June. In the 1920s, when the first roses were planted, thousands visited The Garden. Around 3,000 rose bushes of over 250 varieties are found in the Garden. The Park also has a path toward Genesee Railway Trail. Maplewood recreation facilities include the Claude Bragdon-designed architect YMCA located at 25 Driving Park Avenue, built-in 1916. It was recently subjected to multi-million dollar expansion as well as reconstruction. The Rose Garden’s religious communities within the area are also noteworthy architecturally as they include the Sacred Heart Cathedral on Flower City Park, Hope Ministry located at Emmanuel Temple on Seneca Parkway, Ascension Episcopal Church on Lake Avenue, and the Dewey Avenue Presbyterian Church.
Rochester, NYC residents are trying to find ways to attract new businesses to the area, making their neighborhoods more welcoming. One of these businesses is the Dark Horse Cafe on Dewey Avenue, which serves as an espresso bar and gathering place for the neighborhood.
